Fever Camp: Philosophy VS. Science.
The Almighty Fever
I'm going to keep it extra simple today because I really want to emphasize the importance of reading the academic and scientific literature on this one.
Fever.
Most parents I meet treat their children with a fever reducing drug as soon as a fever appears.
When the fever comes back, they rush the child off to the urgent care center, or doctor.
The doctor often recommends more OTC fever reducing drugs.
However, it seems that the vast majority of scientific literature doesn't actually back up this practice.
Could it be that the only reason a doctor might suggest this practice, or that a parent or any adult individual might follow this practice, is based more on philosophy of the body rather than a scientific understanding of the body?
The more I study the topic of health and talk to others on matters surrounding illness the more I realize there are two camps of thought, and a third one, lack of thought or concern on the matter:
CAMP ONE: The body has built-in procedures to heal itself and illness itself is evidence of that. Illness tells the mind to tell the human to slow it down, take it easy, and let the body go to work on repairs for a bit.
CAMP TWO: The body needs complete management and that illness itself is evidence of the body's confusion. 'Treating' the body is the only way to go.
CAMP THREE: Lack of personal thought on the matter. They simply follow what others have done for them during times of illness.
Which camp might you be in?
