Food in the Ancient World

By: John M. Wilkins and Shaun Hill
Humans have been eating since...well..... since the beginning. As far as we know.
Today we have fast food. Processed food. Fake food. Organic food. Genetically modified food. Packaged food. Cabinet food. Canned food. Pickled food. Preserved food. Fresh food. Farm to table food. Fat free food. Animal food. Dehydrated food. Plant food. Candy food.
And the list goes on and on....
Have you wondered....what do we really know about food?
Or at least, how can we study it a little more closely?
With most topics, the first place to go is usually to the past. As far back as we can.
Ancient usually signifies pretty old.
So when I picked this book I thought, if anything, it would lead me to new and better questions.
This book covers food in Ancient Greece and Rome mostly, by the way. Not all ancients are covered equally.
But for someone who loves studying food, and health, and human history, it's full of interesting information.
(For example: Acorns were considered 'emergency food'. Cicadas and locusts were eaten in Greece and were considered a 'crunchy delicacy'. Slaves and soldiers ate 'special diets' to ensure they performed at optimal levels and wound't turn on the powers that be.)
These are the kind of tidbits you'll read about in the book.
Fun stuff.
So I'm recommending it.
You can buy the book NEW HERE or USED HERE for a bit less money.
Happy reading!
